Forget Costa Rica. Too expensive. Ignore Uruguay. It’s too far from home. Mexico? Not if you want to speak English 24/7. Belize is currently the hottest spot in the hemisphere for putting down permanent roots. Incentives offered by the government are so mind-boggling, you might think them rumors. They’re not. Look into retiring or moving to Belize seriously before the rest of the world grabs all of the real estate. Start your search with five communities guaranteed to welcome you with open arms.
Ambergris Caye
The biggest, most well-known Belize island earned the nickname “Isla Bonita” for evident reasons: It’s gorgeous. Which is why it has become the capital of Ex-patland. If you can’t find like-minded people who have relocated from your state, your city or maybe even your neighborhood, you’re not looking hard enough! This is a “happening” place with a balance of tranquility, access to sporting and cultural activities and while real estate prices are rising, they still thrill and amaze.
Caye Caulker
Eager to bid adieu to traffic, noise and bustle, but you want a ready-made community of North American emigres? No problem. Find nirvana on Caye Caulker where lots of former U.S. and Canadian citizens bask in the Belize sun. This crowd is the very definition of the word chill. Sure there are lively bars on Caye Caulker–and you won’t have to grab a boat to grocery shop if you move here–but privacy and beauty dominate, so you’ll always be on Jimmy Buffett time if you move here!
Cayo District
Noticed all the Cayes and now a Cayo? The root word is island. Think Florida Keys before they got pricey and crowded! The Cayo District is unique. If you’ve a thirst for living amid rolling hills, farms and rainforest, come here—to the tranquil juncture of twin towns San Ignacio and Santa Elena. Because topographical emphasis isn’t necessarily on beachfront property 24/7, real estate prices tend to be affordable. Shop locally for fresh produce, cheese and chocolate. Visitors comment that Cayo has a “frontier west vibe” compared to other towns attracting northerners, but without the guns and saddles!
Corozal
Located in north Belize in close proximity to Mexico, you can have your cake and eat it too if you buy a home here. Even beachfront property remains affordable because the town embraces the Bay of Chetumal rather than the Caribbean. Can anyone tell the difference? Not really. The ex-pat community is growing at a healthy rate, so everything you need to set up housekeeping is readily available. Corozal deserves a look-see if you’re thinking of relocating to Belize, if only to compare and contrast what you get here, in Mexico’s backyard, compared to the four other locations featured in this post.
