An average of PUP members do not want Francis Fonseca for their leader. However, the problem with the leadership convention is that these average members will not get to vote at the convention because they will be represented by about 3,000 delegates to the convention who will vote for them.
There is an aggressive effort that is being made by the party bosses to send representatives all over the country to convince these delegates to vote for Francis Fonseca instead of John Briceno or Cordel Hyde on the election day. If these delegates are allowed to vote their conscience without any bribes or inducements, John Briceno will become the new leader for the People’s United Party.
Based on the conversations I had, many of the people see the race between John Briceno and Francis Fonseca. They indicated that Cordel Hyde does not have the financial resources, the support nationwide to win the convention and that the PUP will not elect a black man to be their leader.
The delegates to this convention must take their votes seriously in this convention because this could be the end of the People’s United Party if they cast a vote for Francis Fonseca. There are some members of the People’s United Party who are willing to severe their ties permanently with PUP if Fonseca retains the leadership. Also, if John Briceno and Cordel Hyde believe that they were robbed of the leadership, they too can leave the PUP permanently, join the UDP in the house, become independent members or form a new political party.
John Briceno and Cordel Hyde have many problems with the way their party is being currently governed under Francis Fonseca. I see them as friends and allies and would not be surprised if Cordel Hyde withdraws his candidacy for the leadership and throws his support behind John Briceno on convention day.
They are both seeking the leadership position in their party because they love the People’s United Party. People like me believe that they love their party more than their party loves them. I have seen and heard the things some members of their party have said about these two men. Yet despite that, they continue to remain loyal to their party.
A human being can only endure a certain amount of suffering and this convention might be it. On January 31, 2016, the delegates will have the power vested in them to decide the future of the People’s United Party. The selection of a new leader is the best hope for PUP to move forward.
